GKS 3168 4°: Ius civitatis Slesvicensis

Parchment, 10 ff., c. 19 × 12,5 > 13 cm; Denmark: Horsens, c. 1317

The manuscript contains the latin version of the town law of Schleswig as copied for the use of the town of Horsens. GKS 3168 4° was copied from a lost exemplar in Horsens and sent by the town council for the use of the citizens of Æbeltoft. The town of Æbeltoft had been granted the right to use the town law of Schleswig in a letter from king Erik Menved dated August 25, 1317. GKS 3168 4° may be contemporary with the royal letter

GKS 3168 4° is the oldest extant manuscript containing the town law of Schleswig. According to a copy made by the historian Jacob Langebek (Royal Library, ms. NKS 417 2°) the manuscript was still kept in the archive of the town of Æbeltoft in 1770. By 1787 it had come to the Royal Library
