GKS 380 2°: Henmannus, Viaticum narrationum

Paper, 85 ff. (3 × VI + VI-1 + VII + V + VII), ca. 28 × 21 cm; saec. XV

Viaticum narrationum is a collection of exempla, arranged alfabetically according to captions at the beginning of each of its 80 narrative pieces. As a compilation it draws on several sources, amongst them works by Caesarius Heisterbacensis, Vincentius Bellovacensis and Johannes Gobi Junior. Under the caption Patientia it includes the Historia Griseldis, probably the youngest source of compilation in the collection. GKS 380 2° is only known manuscript containing the Viaticum narrationum

The title of the work is mentioned in the incipit and explicit. So is the name of the compiler, Henmanus / Henmannus. He is known exclusively from this work and this manuscript, which also informs about his place of origin, but in an abbreviated form. Cataloguers of the manuscript and the editor of the text have all interpreted the abbreviation as Bononiensis. An alternative, perhaps more likely interpretation of it may be Bononensis / Bonnonensis

The manuscript belonged to the library of Gottorp castle in Schleswig, whose manuscripts were transferred to Copenhagen in 1735. Notices in Pechlin's, Petersen's and Möllmann's inventories of the manuscripts of Gottorp indicate that GKS 380 2° was once part of a unit that also included mss. GKS 338 2° (Vegetius) and GKS 718 2° (Adam Bremensis). It got its present binding during the reign of king Christian VII (1766-1808)
