Thott 21 4°: Evangelia IV

Parchment, 158 ff., 23,3 × 16,2 cm; Helmarshausen or Lund, c. 1150

In addition to the four Gospels (preceded by argumenta and breviaria) the manuscript contains a list of pericopes. One quire, containing i.a. the canon tables and a picture of the Evangelist Matthew, has been lost

The manuscript, including the list of pericopes, was copied from Thott 22 4º in The Royal Library. In the lists of pericopes in both manuscripts there are texts for both the vigil and the feastday of S. Lawrence, the patron saint of Lund cathedral. In Thott 21 4° his name has been written in letters that further emphasizes his importance (f. 156r)

The illuminations were influenced by those of ms. C83 in The University Library of Uppsala in particular and by Helmarshausen in general. The manuscript was most likely copied in Lund, and illuminated by a very skilled artist either coming from or trained in Helmarshausen
