GKS 2296 4°: Adam Bremensis, Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum

Parchment, 65 ff., c. 26 × 19 cm; Germany, 1200-1225

GKS 2296 4° is the oldest and most comprehensive of the Adam Bremensis-manuscripts of the Royal Library. It contains the text of Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum, lib.I-IV.21 ("Beatissimo patri et electo celitus ... episcopos interesse non renuant"). The last part of the manuscript has been lost

Red initials mark major sections of the text. The manuscript has not been rubricated, and contains no division of the work into books. Glosses to the text of varying length were copied in the margins

The medieval history of GKS 2296 4° is not known. It was in Hamburg in the 16th century, as is attested by ownership notices on f. 1 recto by Joachim Moller (1500-1558) and his son Eberhard Moller (1527-1588). The last owner of the manuscript in Hamburg was Michael Richey (1678-1761), who acquired it in 1746. It was bought at the auction of Richey's library by the Dane Frederik Christian Sevel (1723-1778). The Royal Library acquired it at the auction of Sevel's library in 1779-81
