GKS 2014 4°: Ovidius, Tristia

Parchment, 47 ff., c. 19 × 9,5 cm; France ?, 1150-1200

Corrections of words and additions of missing lines indicate that the copy was proof read. Interlinear and marginal notes show that it was used. Several poems have headings. Some initials are missing (e.g. on f. 2r, 24v and 41v); others are added, but incorrect (e.g. f. 25r, ”S”, and 35r, ”C”)

An irregularity in book V has caused a misconception of the contents of the manuscript. On f. 43v V.ix.34 is followed by V.x.52, and the 4 final verses of V.ix, which are missing in the main text, have been added in the margin (v. V.ix.38 in the form ”seruiet officio spiritus iste tuo”). The poems V.xi to V.xiv are copied on f. 43v-45v, and are followed on f. 45v-46v by the entire text of V.x. Thus the manuscript contains a complete copy of Tristia, and not the poems from I.i. to V.x.51 only, as stated amongst others by Jørgensen in her Catalogus

On f. 47r there are 19 lines with no relation to the main text, ending with the imperfect hexameter "o diues non omni tempore uiues"

The manuscript was acquired by the Royal Library at the auction of the Chapter Library of Hamburg in 1784. It was revised and signed by Johann Martin Winckler, appointed secretary to the chapter in 1727. The manuscript was rebound during the reign of King Christian VIII (1839-1848)
