Hebrew books and periodicals
The collection of Hebrew books etc. consists of several smaller collections of different provenience, whose earlier owners's interests are mirrored in the collections themselves; for more on the history of the collection, see The Judaica Collection: an historical overview.
The items are shelved in closed stacks, and are to be orderd in REX. They are shelved by
size, which also is indicated in the shelfmark (octavo: -; quarto: k; folio: f, for examles, see
below). The shelfmark normally ends with a serial number, here indicated by #. An overview of the
contents of a particular partial collection (see below) is therefore possible in REX by a
truncated search for "Shelfmark", e.g. "heb-go-*".
The
Old Collection (Ældre Samling) comprises works printed 1600-1950, largely
originating with the acquisition of David Simonsen's private library (1932). Shelfmarks: heb-#,
hebk-#, hebf-#, hebt-# (e.g. heb-1234). The collection is for reading room use only.
Subjects: Rabbinics, history, scholarly studies and editions.
The Responsa collection consists almost solely of works from David Simonsen's personal collection. Shelfmarks: heb-resp-# (e.g. heb-resp-123) and hebk-resp-[year]-# (acquisitions 1974-82); can also be searched for by entering "wno=responsa" i REX' Command search (under "Advanced search"). The collection is mainly for reading room use.
The
Eibeschütz Collection consists of works previously in the University Library
(often acquired with funds donated by Simon Eibeschütz). Shelfmarks: heb-ei-#, hebk-ei-# (e.g.
heb-ei-12345). The collection is only for reading room use.
Subjects: Rabbinics, scholarly studies and editions.
The
Goldschmidt Collection consists primarily of scholarly editions of Rabbinic
literature, that were part of the library acquired in 1949 from Lazarus Goldschmidt. Shelfmarks:
heb-go-#, hebk-go-#, hebf-go-#. The collection is for reading room use only.
Subjects: Bibliographical works, Rabbinics, scholarly studies and editions.
The works in the
New Collection are published 1951 and later. Shelfmarks: heb-[year]-#,
hebk-[year]-# (e.g. heb-73-234 and heb-2004-14). The works are available for lending.
Subjects: scholarly studies and editions, fiction, Rabbinics, Israel, Jewish history
Periodical, year books etc. are found in both the Old and the New Collection;
