Thursday March 22, 2007 the Royal Library held the topping off ceremony for the new building on Amager.
Director Erland Kolding Nielsen and Niels Thorup from the architects, Dissing+Weitling, commented briefly on the
building project and its significance for the library and the university.
10 months have passed from the first cut into the ground to hoisting the last concrete elements into place. In a year the building should be ready to open for its new users.
When this stage is finished, the building in Ørestad North will serve as a modern research library : readers' desks and open shelves, office facilities and modern climate-controlled stacks. Emphasis has been placed on good working conditions for the users of the library; simulation studies have been carried out with regard to lighting conditions, indoor climate and acoustics.
The building is located at the central university square.
The combined area of all floors is 13,300 m², of which this stage is 5,586 m².
Plans call for c. 430 reader's desks with wireless net access, which is four times the number at the current
library at Njalsgade 80 and 60,000-70,000 books on open shelves.
The stacks will have a capacity of c. 71,000 shelf meters.
