Head of Department: Birgit N. Henriksen

The main task of the department is to ensure that the digital cultural heritage is stored for the future.

Our cultural heritage is common property and in line with the development of the Internet there is an increasing need to store the digital cultural heritage. The department is part of Netarchive.dk and contributes to the development of the software, which is used for harvesting, storage and preservation of the Danish part of the Internet. The so-called "digital legal deposit"  is based on the two national libraries The State and University Library, Århus and The Royal Library, Copenhagen harvest the Danish Internet on a regular basis (see  www.netarchive.dk).

The development of new legal deposit forms takes place in close collaboration between the Royal Library and the University and State Library. As a member of the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) the Royal Library seeks to influence development in this area as well as ensuring that our own solutions lie within accepted standards. (see < www.netpreserve.org>).

The department is also participating in a large scale EU research project concerning digital preservation (see www.planets-project.eu).

The Royal Library has since 2009 had a separate preservation policy for digital material. This policy is revised from time to time, and will also in 2010 be accompanied by a strategy for the implementation of this policy.
