The Cyrillic alphabet - a new alphabet in The European Union

20 June 2007 - 20 August 2007

Bulgaria is the newest member of the EU. The Royal Library highlights this with an exhibit of posters on the bridge over Christians Brygge from 20 June.

The Bulgarian artists who have created the posters have all taken the entry of a new alphabet into the EU as their point of departure.

The Cyrillic alphabet, created at the end of the ninth century, is interpreted on the posters by twentieth century artists. Old Bulgarian symbols are expressed in a modern style and a modern Cyrillic alphabet.

The creators of the Cyrillic alphabet were the Bulgarian brothers Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. Since 1851 the 24th of May has been celebrated as 'The Cyrillic Alphabet's Day for Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture'.

The Cyrillic alphabet is used by the Serbs, Montenegrins, Russians and White Russians - in addition to the Bulgarians - 200 million people in all.
