at The Black Diamond June 2017
The Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović will create a total installation in 2017 at The Black Diamond that will establish a completely new encounter between the public and the works at The Royal Library. The point of departure is the library's permanent exhibition of treasures that Abramović has been invited to make use of, and the result will be an installation where the exhibition visitors are included as a performative part of the exhibition itself.
Marina Abramović is known as one of the greatest and frontier performance artists of today, and in her artistic approach she often seeks out what is risky and extreme – both in her confrontation with the public and in the toll it takes on her own body. Abramović qualified from the academy of fine arts in Belgrade and since the 1970s she has worked with performance as her artistic practice. Her merits include a whole series of spectacular performance works such as Rhythm 10, The Lovers, Balkan Baroque and The Artist Is Present – the last-named of which was seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2010 by more than 850,000 visitors.
The cooperation with Marina Abramović is a continuation of The Royal Library's longstanding tradition for inviting striking international artists to work on developing the library's collections. Former collaborations include those with Robert Wilson, Hotel Pro Forma, Peter Greenaway and Andrey Bartenev.
The Royal Library's exhibition of treasures shows the most important and most valuable objects and works from The Royal Library's collections over a period of 1,400 years – from Gregory of Tour's History of the Franks from the 7th century to Hans Christian Andersen's diary and Karen Blixen's manuscripts. In connection with work on the project, Marina Abramović has taken as her springboard Søren Kierkegaard's correspondence, Saxo's History of Denmark and Steno's crystal observations – and in this way she has delved deep into the traditional Danish cultural heritage.
The permanent exhibition of treasures with Marina Abramović's total installation will be shown from June 2017 in the Montana Hall at The Black Diamond. The total installation will be shown at the same time as Louisiana's major retrospective exhibition Marina Abramović – The Cleaner.
