Experience one of the truly great works of European musical history with an expanded DiamantEnsemble and the young German tenor Julian Prégardien.

Most often, Franz Schubert’s iconic song cycle Winterreise (1827) is performed in the original version by two gentlemen in full evening dress, but in this version the contemporary German composer Hans Zender has taken the piano score and composed an interpretation for an expanded DiamantEnsemble of no less than 24 players.

The young German tenor Julian Prégardien has formerly visited The Black Diamond with Schubert’s first song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin, which tells of a young man’s desperate love for a young miller’s daughter.

In Winterreise the despair is even greater, chiller and darker, written when Schubert was badly afflicted by syphilis, which in 1828 was to cause his death. It is the story of a young man who, after having been rejected by his beloved, roams in and around the village where she lives.

As he does so, he fades into a non-existence. Feet crush the snow, the ice crunches, a coach horn sounds, dogs bark, and finally the hurdy-gurdy man starts up, and it is as if the young man merges into the hurdy-gurdy man and in the space of one hour has grown old...

Julian Prégardien has appeared at such festivals as Rheingau Music Festival and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern festival and in such concert halls as Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Tonhalle in Zürich. As an oratorio soloist he has been chosen by such conductors as Kent Nagano and Philippe Herreweghe. During the 2016/17 season he has performed at Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg with Hans Zender’s interpretation of Winterreise.
