Politics in a godless age: The German philosopher and social critic Peter Sloterdijk in conversation with the German writer, publicist and cultural historian Manfred Osten.

Sloterdijk’s comprehensive publication from 1983, The Critique of Cynical Reason, was something as rare as a philosophical bestseller.

Since then, the productive and deep-thinking German philosopher has published a host of works. In them, Sloterdijk attempts in a highly personal way to link present-day social analysis with central philosophical modes of thought found from the Greek cynic Diogenes to more recent giants such as Hegel, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Heidegger.

Nach Gott

The point of departure for the conversation between Sloterdijk and Osten is the former’s topical publication Nach Gott.

According to the Norwegian philosopher of literature Eivind Thønneland, the book deals with ‘politics in a godless age’.

In the Norwegian periodical Ny Tid, Thønneland writes that Sloterdijk ‘celebrates the Luther 500th anniversary with the title “After God”. What are we left with in post-metaphysical society? Modern man refuses to obey a higher power but has himself to be that power.’
