Against obscurantists and moralists

Friday 5 February 2016 at 17:00 The Queen's Hall

Caroline de Maigret is the co-author of the book ‘How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are’. The epitome of Parisian cool: model, muse, music producer. She lives Parisian style and believes in women’s strength. In a conversation with Ellen Hillingsø.

While our image of Paris as the city of life was severely put to the test in 2015, the international bestseller ‘How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are’ defiantly takes the whole world by storm, translated into 32 languages – and now also into Danish. To the International Authors’ Stage we have invited one of the authors, Caroline de Maigret, who apart from being a music producer, a muse for Chanel and a top model is also a feminist with a fundamental belief that women own the future. And that belief goes hand in hand with the manifestation of the values that emanate from the metropolis of Paris.

To live Parisian style as a woman means, among other things, that one never becomes a mater dolorosa, devoting one’s life entirely to one’s children. In principle, the female Parisian will never give anything up of the raffish life she led before she had children, and as is called for to live in Paris. And what happens when one does not give up anything for motherhood? Chaos – and lots of it! So much so, that it become a new kind of order, which simply teaches the children that one of the most important values in life is precisely joie de vivre: wine every day, croissants for breakfast, high heels and from time to time going around naked beneath one’s Burberry Trench.

How to Be Parisian – Danish style

One of the main projects of the book is to emancipate women from the demand for perfection that is incessantly plugged by the women’s magazine industry. Women are called on to be their own knights in shining armour. And from the city of cities comes the message: Forget everything about (American) moral and political correctness, about your appearance being perfect, likewise your career, your love-life and motherhood.

Caroline de Maigret, in a conversation with Ellen Hillingsø in Dronningesalen, will explain why it is important precisely now to insist on living Parisian style, against all the obscurantists and moralists in the world. The conversation will be in English.

‘How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are’ will be go on sale from Lindhardt og Ringhof in Danish on 4 February under the title ‘How to Be Parisian – kærlighed, stil & dårlige vaner’ (How to Be Parisian – love, style and bad habits). Authors: Caroline de Maigret, Sophie Mas, Audrey Diwan and Anne Berest. Organised in cooperation with The French Embassy in Denmark and the publisher Lindhardt og Ringhof.
