International Authors’ Stage

Per Olov Enquist and Suzanne Brøgger talking about Ett annat liv [“Another Kind of Life”]

”Readers should just accept this offering with gratitude …” That’s what the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet wrote about P.O. Enquist’s Ett annat liv. The book is now topping the charts in Denmark, as is Per Olov Enquist.

He will be the first foreign author to visit the International Authors’ Stage in the new season. In dialogue with his colleagues and the author Suzanne Brøgger, Enquist will tell us about the autobiography, for which he has received the Swedish August Prize, among others.

In Ett annat liv [”Another Kind of Life”], which extends from the Swedish province of Västerbotten to Broadway, the artist gives centre stage to his creative and destructive sides. It starts in North Sweden, where Enquist grows up in a strict Christian community that views the demon of alcohol as the greatest of all demons.

In conversation with Suzanne Brøgger, Enquist will touch upon some of the central topics in his book: How he succeeded in becoming one of the most successful authors in the Nordic countries. How he gained great international success and lived for a number of years in Copenhagen, where he was the originator of one of the Royal Theatre’s greatest hits with the public, Från regnormarnas liv [Rain Snakes]; but also how in the midst of this success a personal crisis began to evolve, in which his childhood demon took hold of him.

Per Olov Enquist (b. 1934) grew up in Västerbotten. He débuted as an author in 1961, but did not achieve his breakthrough until Magnetisörens femte vinter [The Magnetist’s Fifth Winter] (1964) and Legionärerna [”The Legionaries”] (1968), for which he received the Nordic Council’s Prize. There later followed a long string of plays and novels, including Livläkarens besök [”The Royal Physician’s Visit”], which was awarded the August Prize for best Swedish novel in 1999.

The book Ett annat liv appeared in Danish [“Et andet liv”] on 22 January 2009, published by Samlerens Forlag/Rosinante & Co.
