International Authors’ Stage Nigerian writer Ben Okri (b. 1959) got his international breakthrough with The Famished Road (1991) for which he also received the Booker prize. Okri is known and loved for his blend of social and magical realism, and with his latest book Starbook, he has created a fascinating cross between a universal fable and a story about African culture before and during the colonisation. Okri was born in Nigeria and has fled the country several times because of war. He grew up in a ghetto in Lagos, studied in London and already had international success at the age of 32.
