The melody for Hymne til Danmark stems from the play Shakespeare (CNW 15), which Nielsen had composed in 1916. He re-used it in Kantate ved Grosserer-Societetets Hundredaarsfest (CNW 111) employing the new text 'Danmark, i tusend Aar'.
