PROGRAMME NOTE: SPIDERMAN (SPIDER & MAN) – PLUCKING THE STRINGS (I-II) – for cello solo (2010). “Spiderman (Spider & Man) – Plucking the Strings” is a study of the cello-pizzicato as played in an unusual position for the instrument, the mode of a guitar. I already employed this mode in the final movement of my “Sonata No. 4 for Cello solo” (2006-07), which exposes the anti-formal feature of a “rhizom”, the tangled form caused by the chaotic ramification in the root system of plants: not a linear or polylinear development, but rather a disparate series of micro-lines.

The same feature is found in this work, two short movements, where serious and jocular masks change enigmatically, without disclosing their possible inner laws-of-connection.

Plucking the Strings was composed for Jakob Kullberg, to be premiered at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2010.
